Shivank Gupta
Shivank is a Robotics Master's graduate from the University of Pennsylvania's GRASP Lab and a researcher in Penn Medicine's PCASO Lab, where he engineers pipelines for autonomous surgical workflows and physical intelligence. His project was recognized by Penn's 2026 "Discovering the Future of AI" Award, contributing to institution-wide efforts to apply AI for clinically actionable surgical insight. He completed his undergrad at WPI in Mechanical and Robotics Engineering.
He also brings direct industry experience from Boston Scientific, prototyping endoscopic medical devices and authoring FDA 510(k) test methods. He is actively seeking full-time CV/ML or robotics engineering roles where he can demonstrate his leadership in bridging the gap between engineering and the OR.

thesis
Surgery is one of the last domains where physical intelligence — real-time embodied reasoning about tissue, tools, and motion, not just perception — still runs almost entirely on human judgment. I believe the next wave of clinical AI won't come from bolting vision models onto existing OR workflows, but from robotics and ML systems built from the ground up around surgical constraints: latency, safety, and regulatory rigor. Most of what I work on — from autonomous surgical pipelines at PCASO to FDA test-method design at Boston Scientific — exists to close the gap between engineering research and what's actually deployable in an operating room.
